fishing reports

Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports diamond jigging on Monday after a 5 day layoff was excellent- you could diamond jig as many bluefish as you wanted. On Tuesday, the seabass fishing was incredible- lots of action, some shorts mixed in, a good number of porgies, and everyone on board had their limit of seabass. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we stayed local and had a good combo of everything- porgies, seabass, fluke, blackfish, and even some jacks- of course we had to throw back what wasn’t in season, but it made for interesting days.

Sunday’s bluefish trip was nothing short of incredible- as good as it could possibly be. As many fish as you could possibly want. Everyone was arm weary after a few hours. Unfortunately, during the course of the trip, a young man on board had a medical emergency- it was unknown whether a heart attack or stroke. Fortunately, there was a cardiologist on board who was able to help. We didn’t want to take any chances, so we headed right in for medical help. We were going to head back out, as we were an hour and half early- but everyone on board had had their fill. Once back to the dock, we took care of filleting the fish while the medical personal attended to the young man. We’d like to thank everyone who was on board for their cooperation and patience during the situation. As Capt. Greg said, health is more important than fish. We would have done the same for anyone out there, including other boats if help was needed. Special thanks to the East Lyme Fire Department and the US Coast Guard for their help as well. We wish this young man well and hope he recovers quickly.

Heather from the office reminds everyone that our schedule is now Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, one trip per day, leaving at 7:00 am. We have a few dates still open for private charters, so give Heather a call if you’d like to get your group on board. We also have a special blackfish trip coming this Wednesday, October 14, and will likely have a few more specialty trips in the coming weeks- be sure to stay tuned to our website and facebook page for details.

fishing reports

Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that diamond jigging for bluefish remains excellent. All areas are producing some fabulous fall fishing, even a combination of a few striped bass and a few black seabass climbing on the Black Hawk jigs. Some trips, when the tide is right, the customers are arm-weary, catching their fill and saying “We can’t catch anymore!”
Bottom fishing has been hampered this week by northeasterly winds. We’ve really been unable to fish in the primary spots that we’ve been accustomed to over the past couple of months. Still a lot of action, people getting their limits of seabass, although the scup has definitely been a little bit different with a lot of smaller fish. Capt. Matt fished down the beach over the weekend, on Saturday, beautiful weather under the beach and picked away on ’em all day long. Hopefully this weather system is going to change and we can get back to fishing where we want to.

It is with a heavy heart that we must report that The Black Hawk, Captain and crew have lost a dear friend this week. Wally was a retired lobsterman from Stonington who ran the 42-foot lobster boat the Peggy K. In a tragic accident this past Tuesday, while anchored up and fishing off of Watch Hill, he was run down by a 60-foot yacht. Wally will be greatly missed by the entire fishing community.

On a more cheerful note, the Black Hawk was excited to have a special fishing trip last Friday night. Madeline Guarraia, a 9 year old girl from Niantic who is currently recovering from a bone marrow transplant as part of her battle against leukemia, made a “wish list”, and on it was “go fishing”. We were happy to help her check that item off of her list. She and a few friends had a great trip, caught their first fish, and even saw some seals. It was a great night and we were so happy to be able to help.

Heather from the office wants to remind everyone that we will continue to fish every day through Columbus Day. Tuesday-Saturday is porgies and seabass at 7:00 am, Sundays and Mondays (including Columbus Day) are bass and blues at 8am. After Columbus Day, we will sail Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday at 7:00 am. As always, check our website or Facebook page for updates

fishing reports

Heather from the Black Hawk office reports a week of good fishing. During the week, our porgy and seabass trips showed some excellent fishing- nice seabass, with many fares getting their limit. Good sized porgies mixed in as well. Saturday’s trip even had some fluke mixed in. Another week of good, solid fishing. Sunday’s trip was good for the bass and blues, with lots of bluefish and a good number of bass mixed in as well. We’re looking forward to more good fall fishing in the weeks to come.
As a reminder, we’re fishing one trip per day now through Columbus Day. Sundays & Mondays are for bass & blues at 8:00 am, Tuesday through Saturday is for pogies and seabass at 7:00 am. An updated schedule for after Columbus Day in October will be posted soon. Important schedule update: We do not have an open trip this Friday, September 25. You can always check the website or Facebook page for updates.

fishing reports

Heather from the Black Hawk office reports a week of good fishing.  During the week, our porgy and seabass trips showed some phenomenal fishing- jumbo seabass, limits all around, and we were throwing back keepers.  Simply excellent fishing.  Saturday’s trip, being a nice weather weekend day, was hampered by a greater number of boats in the area, and while we didn’t have limits like we did during the week, the fishing was still pretty good.

Sunday’s bluefish trip was another great day of fishing, with arm weary customers keeping their fill and releasing the rest.  A few striped bass in the mix as well.

The Black Hawk was once again honored to hold the annual “Hook Up With A Vet” fishing trip last week.  This trip is put together by the New England Salt Water Fishing Club.  Every year we’re thrilled to be able to offer this trip to veterans residing at Rocky Hill Veterans Home.  Once again, the trip was sponsored by Peter Pan bus company, who donated the bus, and Guertin Graphics, who donated t-shirts and trophies for the veterans.  Everyone had a blast and caught their fill of bluefish.  The vets even brought food to donate to the Gemma E Moran Food Bank in New London, which we delivered with a load of donated fish fillets.   Truly one of our favorite evenings of the year and we’re honored to be a part of it.

As a reminder, we’re fishing one trip per day now through Columbus Day.  Sundays & Mondays are for bass & blues at 8:00 am, Tuesday through Saturday is for pogies and seabass at 7:00 am.  An updated schedule for after Columbus Day in October will be posted soon.

fishing reports

Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that Monday again showed some of the best diamond jigging you could ask for. All the bluefish you could possibly want, with a few bass mixed in. All action, full coolers, and tired muscles. Tuesday was back to bottom fishing with excellent seabass fishing, limits all around, full coolers with a nice combination of porgies mixed in. Unfortunately, the rest of the week was a wash with the high winds and the pending storm. We’re planning on fishing again Monday. Everyone’s lost a few days, and we’re certainly looking forward to getting back out there. Who knows what’s going to have changed or where we’re going to find ’em, but since we have Mother Nature as a business partner there’s not much we can do about. Just need to grin and bear it. Look for an update in next week’s report.
Heather from the office reports that this is our last week of weekday fishing trips. Starting on Tuesday, October 6, our schedule will be Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, one trip each day, leaving at 7:00 am. We do still have some dates available for private charters, so give us a call and we’ll get your group set up. As always, check our website and facebook page for updates.

FISHING REPORTS

SEPTEMBER 6, 2015

September 14, 2015
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports absolutely excellent seabass fishing all week long. Big fish, a lot of big scup in there too. The only exception was Friday’s trip- due to the strong northeasterly winds we altered our plans a little bit and stayed inside, fishing around Race Rock, the south shore of Fisher’s Island and down at Watch Hill. Fish everywhere we stopped, but no big concentration of them anywhere. As the water chills off, we’re hoping something happens here locally. As of now, the premier fishing is out in the Montauk and Block Island area. There’s been some codfish caught during the week, a handful of fluke here and there too.

On another note, the bluefishing has drastically improved in the Race. The ebb tide has been sensational, all you wanted diamond jigging, a few striped bass mixed in with them. Customers have been catching their fill and releasing the rest on the bluefish trips.

All in all we’re looking for some great fall fishing in the coming weeks.

Heather from the office wants to thank everyone for their Black Hawk and the Community donations so far this month. We were able to take a huge load of dog supplies to Friday’s Rescue Foundation last week, where they will go to help dogs who are awaiting their forever homes. We will still collect these items for the rest of September.

Our After Work Special trips are done for the year, we’d like to thank everyone for a great run with these trips this year. We look forward to more of these trips next year. Heather also reminds everyone that our schedule is now Sundays & Mondays, one trip daily for bass & blues at 8:00 am. Tuesday through Saturday it’s one trip daily for porgies and seasbass. Check the website for a full schedule and updates.
