Capt. Greg reports another excellent week on the porgy grounds. The fish are not spawned out yet and the catching is excellent. Saturday’s trip was reflective of the whole week, with a full boat load of customers and full limits of porgies for everyone. Some days it’s a one drop spot, other days you might have to re-anchor a few times. As a bonus, we had some fluke this week too. Nothing big, up to 3 1/2 pounds. Capt. Matt ran Friday morning’s trip, had great weather and full coolers of porgies, and then clobbered the bass on that evening’s 4-10 After Work Special trip. A lot of action with plenty of short bass, some bluefish, and the boat limit of keeper bass to 30 pounds. Fish were caught on both diamond jigs and bucktails. We’ll be running these trips each week, along with our “Captain’s Choice” Big Bass Night Trips. Both of these trips are by reservation with a limited number of anglers, so check our website and get your reservation in. No crowds, no tangles, just great fishing. Come see the difference!

May 22, 2016
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that we had a week of excellent porgy fishing. The weather has been beautiful and the fishing has been fantastic. We’ve had a lot of porgies, and a lot of seabass, which we unfortunately had to throw back because the New York season isn’t open yet. When the tide conditions permitted, we split the trips because the porgy fishing was so good, and we caught some beautiful fluke- 3-5 pounds, some real nice stuff! We hope to do to the same this week. Bluefishing has been sporadic. We’re not really targeting them right now, but some days we’re getting a bunch, others not as much.

fishing reports
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that the spring porgy run has certainly begun. Friday’s trip showed some good fishing, with a lot of people getting their limits. Some striped bass, bluefish and weakfish mixed in with them. A lot of seabass, but they unfortunately had to be thrown back. Saturday’s trip they didn’t bite so well, it was a pick all day long. Flat calm, bright sunshine and very crowded conditions made it tougher than Friday. Sunday proved to be a lot better, and despite strong westerly winds, the fishing was very, very good. A lot of people easily got their limits, and everybody had plenty of fish. We’re fishing in the Greenport area, and the wind, although it is in many other places, isn’t really a concern up there. Sunday, even though it blew a gale, had the conditions comfortable and the fishing good. We’d like to recognize a special fisherman we had on the boat this weekend. Eleven year old Kenneth Morales, who is the Defending Junior Olympic National Champion in boxing, joined us over the weekend. He had a great time fishing, and we had a great time getting to know him. We wish him the best of luck in is boxing career and hope that many of our Facebook and website followers will follow him as his career progresses.
Heather from the office wants to remind everyone about our current schedule. We’re fishing Saturdays and Sundays at 6:00 am (with the exception of this Saturday, May 21, when we do not have an open trip). We also have some limited space available-reservation only trips heading out during the week, so be sure to check our website and Facebook page for those. We will also have a trip on Memorial Day Monday, heading out at 6:00 am. As always, visit our website, Facebook page, or call the office for more info.

fishing reports
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that stiff easterly winds and torrential rains hampered the porgy grounds the end of this week. Friends of ours crushed them on Wednesday, Thursday was a little slow and Friday was about as slow as it gets. We did some diamond jigging and quite a bit of action on short bass with everybody catching a bunch. Saturday was a different story; seemed like a bigger bunch of fish moved in, larger fish with a lot of action diamond jigging, and quite a few keepers for all. We spent some time on the scup and although it was better than Friday, it was nothing to write home about. No signs of any bluefish yet, but there are a few weak fish and seabass being caught. Unfortunately, we are fishing in New York waters, so we have to throw the seabass back. It’s the first week of the season, so the best is yet to come.
On a different note, the Trout-A-Thon Tagged Fishing Tournament ended this past Saturday, May 7th. It’s been a great promotion with thousands of people signing up and over 125 fish being caught. Over $10,000 of the available over $18,000 in cash and prizes was paid out. It has successfully been the highest percentage of return in any tagged fishing survey, according to Connecticut DEEP officials. We would like to thank our sponsors; Rowledge Pond Trout Hatchery, RayMarine, Fisherman’s World in Norwalk and the Fisherman’s Magazine for their participation. We’re already making plans for next year; it will be bigger and better with a lot more fish being tagged, in more streams, lakes and ponds throughout Connecticut, worth more in prizes. We thank everyone for participating.
Heather from the office wants to let everyone know that our schedule right now is Saturdays and Sunday, one trip each day, leaving at 6:00am. We’ll be adding some weekday trips and specialty trips in the next few weeks, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and check our website for details. We look forward to seeing everyone soon!

Stay tuned to our website and Facebook page for fishing updates and special trips. We’ll be adding some weekday trips in the upcoming weeks, so be sure to stay tuned for updates.
The second annual Trout-a-Thon has a week left to go. We’ve had over 120 tagged fish caught so far, and there are still more out there! Be on the lookout for those bright yellow tags while you’re out there. Good luck this week!

fishing reports
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that we headed out codfishing on Monday, and it was probably one of the nicer days we’re going to have for an early spring day- flat calm, bright sunshine, and warm. The fishing has had its ups and downs lately, but Monday was pretty good. They bit better first thing in the morning. Some of the guys had close to their limit, nothing big, all 8-12 pounds, with a few pollock mixed in. The good thing is- no dogfish! We had a special angler with ten year old Nathan, who was celebrating his birthday on the boat, and caught some nice codfish. Great job Nathan!
Saturday we had a special trip, a bachelor party for S&S Marine out of Old Saybrook. We took the guys out for a seal watch and lighthouse cruise. We then headed to Dodson’s Marina in Stonington to drop off the group for dinner and drinks at the Dog Watch Cafe, Stonington’s premier on the water restaurant. Congrats to the groom!
Don’t forget to be on the lookout for those tagged trout while you’re out trout fishing! We’ve had over 100 of the tagged trout caught, and we’ve given away some great prizes.
Heather from the office reports that we will start our regular season trips on Saturday, May 7. We’re looking forward to seeing all of our customers and having a great season! As always, check our website and Facebook page for schedule updates, fishing reports and more.

fishing reports
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that the Trout-A-Thon tournament is still going strong. We’ve had over 90 tagged fish caught so far, with more tags still swimming
around out there. We’ve had a few $750 winners, a few $250 winners, and many, many $75 winners. Be on the lookout for the tagged fish while you’re out trout fishing.
We’re planning on heading out for some codfishing, as long as the weather permits- check our website and Facebook page for details. We’ll start fishing our regular trips in May,
and will post a full schedule online soon.
Heather from the office reports that we’ll also be heading out for some seal watches this week- stay tuned and we’ll post the schedule online. Proceeds from these trips will go to local charitable organizations as part of our Black Hawk and the Community program. Thanks for all of your support!

fishing reports
The Second Annual Black Hawk’s tagged Trout-A-Thon went off without a hitch this opening trout fishing weekend. During the week, over 175 fish were tagged and released, worth over $17,000 in cash and prizes. As of this writing, over $5,000 in prizes were caught over this opening weekend, with the tournament continuing over the next 30 days. Sponsors included Raymarine, Fisherman’s World in Norwalk, The Fisherman Magazine, and Dockside Electronics in Mystic. The response has been phenomenal. Go to our website or follow us on Facebook for complete details.

fishing reports
The weather was chilly but the fishing was still hot on the codfish. Unfortunately, seabass season is closed so we had to return all the seabass we caught but everyone went home with a good batch of codfish. We’ll continue fishing as long as the codfishing is this hot. We’ll be fishing on the weekends as weather permits, and will try to get a trip or two in on the weekdays too. We’re in the process of making arrangements to move the boat to the east in an effort to cut our travel time to Block Island in half. This will reduce travel time and increase our fishing time. Look on our website or facebook page for details.
DECEMBER 20, 2015
fishing reports
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that Friday was a good day. We had a lot of codfish- we drifted most of the day, and some of the drifts has as many as 15-18 fish. Seabass were mixed in and as a bonus, if you wanted ’em, there were as many mackerel as you could possibly catch. Some of the guys who wanted them easily caught over 100. Unfortunately, Saturday and Sunday were blowouts because of the stiff winds.
We’re planning on heading out the Saturday and Sunday after Christmas, weather permitting. After that, we’ll be doing some cod trips when the weather allows. Be sure to stay tuned to our emails and Facebook for updates.
On behalf of the Black Hawk family, we’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and best wishes for a fabulous 2016!
DECEMBER 13, 2015
fishing reports
Capt. Greg reports that great weather and great fishing accompanied us all this week. How can it possibly be the middle of December? Loads of codfish and seabass coming over the rails. Porgies have moved a little bit to the east, a little bit farther away. They’re still there thick as can be, but we’re kind of staying away from them little bit because the codfish and seabass have been so good. We’re even catching some mackerel, pollock, and a few blackfish- although unfortunately, the season is closed right now.
A lot of bait around Block Island- herring and mackerel, and we’ve seen lots of seals, dolphins, and even some whales. It’s really a late season mecca. A winter wonderland of cod and seabass, only without the winter. Happy Fishmas!
Heather from the office reminds everyone that we’ll plan on fishing steadily, weather permitting, right up to Christmas. These are all limited trips by reservation only, so plan accordingly and call early, as the trips are filling up. We also plan on going out on some specialty cod fish trips after the first of the year, so stay tuned to your email for dates and reservation information. It doesn’t take long to fill them up! With the fishing and weather this good, it’s a real bonus for this time of year.
Don’t forget, Black Hawk gift certificates are available now. Give a fishing trip or two to your family and friends for Christmas, and come see why the Black Hawk was voted the most popular party boat in Connecticut for 2015. Remember to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for up to the minute information and details on upcoming trips.
Get ready- we also plan on doing some seal watches over the Christmas vacation! We’re looking forward to doing some special trips, including a fundraiser for Madeline- you may have read about her in the fall when she came out on a special fishing trip with us. We’re looking forward to some great trips, so be sure to check your email for when we post the dates, as we know they’ll fill up quickly!

fishing reports
Captain Matt reports an excellent week of both weather and fishing aboard the Black Hawk. Friday’s trip was a one drop spot; we stayed there the whole day. Excellent load of sea bass, cod with a good mix of porgies. The weather for Saturday’s trip was next to perfect. Beautiful October type weather, only in December- not quite short sleeve weather, but close. A lot more codfish in the first few hours. We left them biting to find more sea bass and it didn’t take long. Anchored up on a pile of them and stayed there the rest of the day. Porgies and cod were also caught, but sea bass was the main stay. Sunday was another great weather day, but with a slight westerly wind. Once again, we started off predominantly on the codfish, and like Saturday, eventually ended up on the sea bass and scup. There were a few blackfish mixed in on all of the trips and no dogfish on any days, which made the fishing even easier. Pool fish were codfish every day in the 18 to 24 pound range. Customers left tired and arm weary but with smiles on their faces and full coolers. It just can’t get any better for this time of year….great weather with fantastic fishing.

fishing reports
Captain Greg reports another great week of fishing during the Thanksgiving holiday. Tuesday’s trip was good, but Wednesday’s trip was one of the nicest; flat calm with great fishing. Spectacular weather for this time of year has made this week some of the best fishing the Black Hawk has seen for late November. Friday’s trip was just a steady pick all day long; we never really got a flurry. Saturday’s trip was next to spectacular; we anchored up on one spot and stayed for the entire day. Porgies, sea bass and plenty of codfish, and we even had a few bluefish and blackfish to round out the menu of the day’s catch. Guys were tired but happy when they reached the dock. Sunday’s trip was again a nice weather day. Started off a little slower in the morning, but ended with a bang. Everyone had their limit of seabass, bags full of porgies, and quite a few codfish mixed in as well. Dogfish were not a problem this week. All week, the pool winners were codfish in the 20lb range.
Heather from the office reports that we will continue to fish on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as long as the weather permits. As a reminder, these trips are by reservation only and have limited space available, so be sure to call early to get your spot on board. When the weather cooperates, we’ll be doing some mid-week trips as well, so stay tuned to your email and our Facebook page for up to date info on that.

fishing reports
Fishing during the week was excellent aboard the Black Hawk, reports Capt. Greg. Wednesday was nothing short of spectacular. The weather was gorgeous; flat calm all day, and the fishing couldn’t get any better. All the porgies you could possibly ask for, big jumbo seabass, and a good scattering of codfish. We even had a few blackfish and a handful of bluefish come over the rails and into the coolers.
Thursday and Friday, unfortunately, we couldn’t fish due to the weather. On Saturday, despite brisk northeast winds, we went back to the scene of the crime in the lee of Block Island. The weather was nice but it was just a pick for the first couple hours. We finally moved outside when the wind dropped out and it was a one drop spot. Anchored up, stayed there the whole afternoon, and again, had excellent fishing. Plenty of porgies and seabass with a good mix of cod, a few blackfish and a few bluefish mixed in. Handful of dogfish mixed it, but they certainly weren’t a problem. Sunday’s trip was very, very good, with a lot more codfish coming over the rails- over half a hundred keeper codfish, with fish up to 19 pounds.
Our schedule is now Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, one trip each day, leaving at 6:00 am. These trips are reservation only and limited to 30 people, so you’ll need to call the office to get a spot on board. When the weather is good, we also plan on doing some weekday trips- this week we’ll be heading out on Tuesday and Wednesday. All of our trips from now on are by reservation only, so be sure to call the office to grab a spot. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as your email, for our special coming up this weekend for Small Business Saturday. You won’t want to miss it! On behalf of Capt. Greg and the entire Black Hawk crew, we’d like to wish everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.
NOVEMBER 15, 2015
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that we had a specialty trip on Tuesday, leaving at 5:00 am. Weather was calm, fishing was absolutely excellent- the porgy fishing was just sensational. Big scup, double and triple headers, everybody catching their limit in a heartbeat. We then went outside farther to where the seabass were, and almost everybody caught their limit of big seabass. A few codfish mixed in with a few bluefish as well. On the way in, the weather started deteriorating, the wind started to pick up, and it has been blowing ever since. We lost all of the other days were supposed to fish this week, including our special Veterans Day trip. As of this writing, we’re still waiting for the winds to be subside so that we can continue our season.
Our schedule is now Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, one trip each day, leaving at 6:00 am. These trips are reservation only and limited to 30 people, so you’ll need to call the office to get a spot on board. When the weather is good, we also plan on doing some weekday trips- so stay tuned to your email and our Facebook and Twitter pages for updates on when we’ll do those trips. We hope to see you soon!
NOVEMBER 8, 2015
Heather reports from the Blackhawk that just when you think it can’t get any better, BANG! It goes from being very good to absolutely sensational. We fished every day this week, and although the legal size limits on the seabass are 14 inches, some days we went from 14 to 18 to 20 to 22 inch limits. Why catch a three or four pounder when you can catch a 6 to 6 ½ pounder. What does that tell you? Big seabass….MONSTERS. Spectacular Fishing! Customers couldn’t believe it; some didn’t realize they could get that big. Jumbo porgies, cod fish, black fish and even a handful of blue fish each day rounded out the trips. Customers were arm weary with full coolers going off the boat. Weather overall has been spectacular for this time of year! Saturday’s trip, despite brisk northwesterly winds, was absolutely the best of the week. We anchored up on a pile of them and stayed there the whole trip. Sunday was a little bit of a different story; still had some northwesterly breeze which blew in quite a few dogfish. The fishing was still good, but a little more challenging as you had to get though the dogs. We moved around to a few spots but we still seemed to attract ‘em. Overall, it was still a great day of fishing for mid-November.
If you’re looking to fill your freezer with top quality fish, this is the time of year to do it! Although our schedule now is Fridays Saturdays and Sundays, sailing at 7 am, we have a lot of private charters and many specialty trips coming up. Stay tuned to our website, and get on our email list because these trips fill up as soon as we post them. Make sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to check out pictures, videos and reports on our trips.
The Black Hawk sends a special thank you to all our service men and women for your willingness to serve and for your personal sacrifices. Without all of you, we couldn’t have the freedom to be doing what we all love to do! This week, to show our appreciation for your service, we are holding a special trip on Wednesday for our Veterans with a special price as a thank you from all of us on the Blackhawk! As always, give the office a call if you have any questions or want the most up to date fishing or weather report. We’re also still collecting items for our Black Hawk and the Community program- we’re hoping to help make Thanksgiving a bit easier for some local families and are collecting food items- especially needed are stuffing mix, canned vegetables, and bread/roll mixes. Thanks for helping!
NOVEMBER 1, 2015
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that last Sunday’s trip was very good for bottom fishing- lots of porgies and jumbo seabass. The fishing this fall has been very consistent. Of course, this time of year it’s a weather situation, so don’t forget to check the weather before you head down for your trip. Tuesday’s special trip was superb– a beautiful day of fishing. Coolers full of porgies and seabass, with a few codfish mixed in there as well. Friday’s trip was a little nautical- with the heavy northwest winds, we were prevented from going where we wanted to go- so we stayed inside. We picked away at the porgies and seabass, but it was nothing like the fishing in the Montauk or Block Island areas. Had a few codfish here and there too. A totally different story on Saturday. Flat calm, bright sunshine- we couldn’t have asked for anything better. Big, big seabass, in the 5-6 pound rage, with hubcap porgies and some nice codfish too. The pool winner was an 18 pound codfish. Everyone went home happy with full coolers. Probably the best day so far of the fall fishing season. Again, what an unbelievable difference a day can make. In direct contrast to Saturday’s beautiful day, Sunday arrived with a stiff southwesterly gale. We still went- and the fishing was certainly as good as Saturday, but not everybody could catch ’em. Plenty of big seabass, plenty of big porgies, but it was a little nautical. Again, we remind people to check the forecast before heading out- not just the sun and the temperature, but the wind as well. You can always call the boat office and we’ll give you an update on the latest conditions we’ve heard.
Heather from the office reminds everyone that our schedule is now Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, one trip each day, leaving at 7:00 am. We still have some semi-private charters coming up, and a few specialty trips coming up as well, so stay tuned to our website and Facebook page for more info on those.
OCTOBER 25, 2015
fishing reports
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that unfortunately, Tuesday’s blackfishing trip had to be canceled due to high winds and rough seas. There’s no sense of beating everybody up for a handful of fish, we just couldn’t do it. We’re hoping the weather cooperates for our trip coming up this Thursday. On Wednesday, the weather cleared and we had a bluefish charter. We slayed the bluefish, diamond jigging as many as anyone could want, filled all the coolers, exhausted everyone, and then as a little bonus we went seabass and scup fishing. The good anglers got their limit of seabass and everyone had some nice porgies before we went in. Overall, excellent fishing.
Friday, in spite of heavy northerly winds, we fished in some protected waters and really got the seabass and porgies, with a handful of codfish and a few blackfish as well. Excellent fishing, once again, mostly limits on the seabass all the way around with nice stuff, up to 5-6 pounds. Loads of porgies with some nice codfish as well. Saturday was the same. Capt. Matt had the boat on both Satruday and Sunday, both of those days were very good on the bottom fishing, a handful of bluefish mixed in- even though we’re not going for them- we still got a few of ’em. Overall, an excellent week of fishing. We’re looking forward to continued success in the next few weeks.
Heather from the office wants to remind everyone that our schedule is Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, one trip daily at 7:00 am. This time of year, it’s a good idea to call a day or two ahead of time to check on the conditions before heading down. We also have some trips going out during the week- we’ve got a semi-private charter that still has a limited number of spots available on Tuesday the 27th, and a blackfish trip coming up on Thursday, October 29 Stay tuned to our website and facebook page as we plan on adding a few more special trips in the upcoming weeks.
OCTOBER 18, 2015
fishing reports
Capt. Greg from the Black Hawk reports that we fished every day this week, with an open trip on Columbus Day Monday, a reservations-only blackfish trip on Wednesday, charters during the week and open trips on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Columbus Day Monday showed excellent bluefishing, on both tides with the diamond ijgging, I know we say this all the time, but literally as many as you wanted. If you wanted to catch your limit and then release 40 more fish you could have done it. The blackfish trip on Wednesday was decent, we had togs up to 8 1/2 pounds. As on every blackfish trip, there are people that are better at it than others. It truly tests one’s fishing ability. Some people handily had their limit, while others struggled to catch one, and a few others didn’t even have a fish. That’s tog fishing. Do yourself a favor, if you go on any boat, private or a charter or party boat, get braid line, a good rod suited for that depth and that sinker wait, get the best of hooks and the best of terminal tackle and learn the secrets of successful tog fishing.
Saturday and Sunday was just absolutely dynamite seabass and porgy fishing, limits of both all around the boat, with double headers coming over the rail. It just can’t get any better. A few codfish caught amongst the slaughter, a few blackfish caught, and even a few bluefish thrown into the mix. If you’re looking to fill your freezers, now’s the time.
A noteworthy catch this week, congrats to Capt. Bob and the Sunbeam fleet in setting a new state record on the tautog, smashing the previous record of 23 pounds. That’s the third state record to come out of Two Tree Island Channel, which just goes to show we’ve got some monster fish off the Connecticut Coast. Congratulations Bob!
Heather from the office wants to remind everyone that we will have an open trip this Friday at 7:00 am. We do not have an open trip on Saturday, and Sunday is a special trip with reservations required. We will return to our regular schedule, open trips on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 7:00 am, on October 30. We also have a few dates open for our “semi-private” charters. Contact Heather for more info about these. As always, visit our website or Facebook page for updates, reports and more!
