Heather from the Black Hawk finally gets to report some fishing news! Our season opener on the scup grounds on Friday was a success! Despite the extremely cold winter and early spring we had, we were pleased to see them waiting for us! Although it wasn’t a ferocious bite, as soon as we came tight on the anchor they started coming over the rail, and continued for the entire trip. Some anglers were able to produce limits, others were not far behind, and some just got what they wanted for dinner and enjoyed being back on the water.

Saturday and Sunday were a bit different, with the wind and tide not cooperating and making conditions difficult. It was a very finicky bite, we tried many spots but just couldn’t get the bite going like we wanted to. We put in some overtime, but sometimes we just have tough days, that’s just fishing. We’ll always be honest and tell you when it’s good, and tell you when it’s not so good. We’re looking forward to some warmer weather and better fishing!

Saturday evening we had a great seal watch with a group of local photographers. We saw loads of seals and a few lighthouses, and everyone got some amazing pictures. As usual, we will have our usual Saturday evening sunset seal watches in the summer, but if you’d like to book a private sunset cruise for your group, we’d love to have you!

Our famous “Calamari Safari” trips will start this weekend! Trips go on sale Monday night at 8pm, and are sure to fill up fast, so grab your spot! We’re still booking charters, with only a few spots left for the end of May and early June. Summer dates are also filling fast, so be sure to email the office to get your date on the calendar soon.

Thanks for a great start to the season, we look forward to seeing everyone soon!

December 28, 2025

Heather from the Black Hawk office reports that we headed out on Sunday after the snowstorm for our last trip of the season, and it was a beautiful late December day on the water. The seabass have their bags packed and are ready to move out , but we still had a nice showing to put in the coolers. Some ling to round out the mix, and cod that we released unharmed. Not a bad way to wrap up the season!

December 21, 2025

Heather from the Black Hawk reports that while we only made it out one day last week, it was a nice day out on the water! Plenty of good sized seabass, with many customers getting their limit. Still some jumbo scup around too! Plenty of ling and bergals to fill up the coolers too. We even had a few pollock and some cod, which were released unharmed. Overall, a beautiful mid-December day on the water.

We’re hoping to get at least one more trip in after Christmas, so hopefully Mother Nature cooperates.

From our Black Hawk family to yours, we’d like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!
